What
is in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet...but never
has there been a more aptly named horse.
The name "Knight"
immediately sprung to mind as I looked down at the perfect, enormous
cremello colt on that September morning in 2004. The only marking on him
was a wide blaze shaped like a royal scepter. It was as if he had been
born knighted.
This highly anticipated
colt was the product of one of our best mares, I'm Liquid Gold (a stunning
palomino; sadly, now deceased), and a son of the most popular cremello stallion in
the walking horse industry: Royal Ivory. His sire's name and his creamy
off-white coloring suggested yet another part to his name: "Ivory."
The colt's lineage
traced back to the "Bud England" line of palominos from both sides. This
line of palomino horses is generally considered to be one of the finest in
the breed. Horses from this line have been successful in all walks of life
- from the rail to the trail. And so, "England's Ivory Knight" was named.
Quite a
while has passed since the night he was named. When he was born,
Ivory Knight stood 42" to the wither at birth, now (at 2
1/2 years) he stands a full 16.1 hands.
He
has the laid-back attitude that Royal Ivory offspring are known
for, with a dash of his dam's personality. One moment he looks
aloof and commanding - surveying his domain as if he were king
rather than a knight. The next he is whinnying and trying
desperately to get your attention with his silly colt antics in
the paddock.
With his
commanding presence, it isn't hard for Ivory Knight to get the
attention he seeks. His natural presence is only enhanced by his
physical appearance.
His size, both height and girth, is massive, giving him an air
of power and strength. His neck comes straight out of his
shoulder and his keen ears and large eyes give him a confident,
alert look. His incredibly long, thick mane, tail, and forelock
make him look like he stepped right out of a fairy tale.
Ivory Knight was
started under saddle in late December, 2006. He
has come along beautifully.
