Merry Man's Charm

A friend of mine, Claire Gosnell, just sent me an email of your July issue of the Society newsletter and I am beyond thrilled. She knew that I would be interested in the article on Calvin Miller. I bought Merry Man's Charm who came from Calvin's ranch many years ago, and she gave us some beautiful foals ,one of which I still own, a gelding named Jetstar's Sunrider, who stood for several years before I had him gelded and who sired the deceased Blue Gold, who was owned by Arrows Walkers in Arapahoe Colorado. Blue Gold sired Golden Gambler so the bloodlines continue.

We had no idea what we had when we had Merry Man's Charm, no idea at all. The folks here in Colorado were just getting into the Walking Horses and were bringing in a lot of not- so- nice, pacey, ex- show horses, because they didn't know what they could have had if they'd just looked to the west. I knew that I did not want what was available here and by accident saw an ad in the Denver paper for "Dolly". She was being sold by a gentleman who had gone up to Calvin's to find her, and he had trained her beautifully, and we were so blessed to find her. It took us a few years to figure out just what we had, and we had some lovely conversations with Calvin before he passed away. We then found a wonderful son of Sun's Delight D., and from these two beautiful horses we got some beautiful, gentle, calm, and kind foals.

I was devastated to hear of the dispersal of Calvin's horses, and as I was not in the position at that time to buy any; I tried very hard here in Colorado to find homes for some of them but it was not meant to be. I am thrilled that Slush Creek and Arrows Walkers do have some of Calvin's horses.

Merry Man's Charm was purchased from Calvin by a gentleman in Fort Collins, Colorado, whose ad we saw in the Denver paper. This man had trained "Dolly" beautifully and gently, and we were so blessed to have found her. Once we saw the quality of the horses Calvin was breeding and rode that natural gait, we sold our other Walkers that had all come from back east. It is a comfort to know that Calvin's bloodlines survive through Rambo and Peaches. Peaches had a filly by Glamour named Promise of Glamour who was sold to a lady in Wyoming. I have tried to track her down but was not successful. Rambo is living out his days at my boarding facility up near Evergreen, Colorado and is happy, healthy, and runs on 100 acres with his great grandson, Image, who I was blessed to find two years ago. So the dream continues....
